About Esurance Car Insurance

Esurance Insurance Services, Inc. is an American company that started offering vehicle and home insurance directly to U.S. consumers in 1999. Its direct-to-consumer approach – employing the phone and an innovative online platform – quickly gained popularity with customers, and Allstate purchased Esurance in 2011. Today, Esurance operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Allstate.

The company expanded into Canada in 2015, offering insurance services in Alberta. Ontario expansion came two years later. Unfortunately, since July 2018, Esurance Canada has ceased offering customers new policies and sold policy-renewal rights to Ivantage, a broker within The Allstate Group.

How Can You Save on Car Insurance with Esurance?

Thanks to its streamlined business model and use of an online platform, Esurance maintains low operating costs compared to traditional insurance providers. These reduced costs enable the company to offer a significant discount on insurance policies. Here are just a sample of those discounts:

Multi-vehicle discounts

If you insure more than one car with Esurance, the company offers you a discount on each policy.

Switch & Save

If you decide to switch from another insurance provider, Esurance provides you a discount on its standard policy pricing.

Partnership discounts

New drivers that decide to complete driver and safety training provided by one of Esurance’s partners are eligible for a discount on their car insurance.

Online Shopper Savings

By using Esurance’s online platform and applying for an insurance quote online, you are eligible for a discount.

Paperless discounts

New Ontario customers who apply for insurance directly online are eligible for a 10% discount.

In addition to all the discounts Esurance offers, the member website delivers an extensive knowledge base about different types of policies, coverages, and tips for saving money on insurance premiums. That includes tools such as Coverage Counsellor, which offers advice about choosing the right insurance coverage for your needs, all via an online questionnaire. The customer remains at the center of the business model.

What Other Insurance Products Does Esurance Offer?

As a part of Allstate Family, Esurance focuses on providing two home and motorcycle insurance types rather than covering a broader area.

Esurance’s renters insurance is quite affordable, starting from $14 a month on average. Clients are covered for personal property, liability, medical payments to others, and additional living expenses.

Esurance offers various coverage plans to homeowners. For example, any natural disasters like fires or heavy snowfall, theft, vandalism, and even guests’ medical expenses if injured on your property are all covered under a homeowners insurance policy. Esurance also offers additional protection for special products like expensive jewelry and collectibles. Esurance is a great choice if you’re seeking comprehensive coverage.

For Motorcycle Insurance, Esurance offers bodily injury and property damage coverage to support your back. This insurance policy is crucial to motorcycle drivers since these coverages can prevent you from paying out of pocket for the other driver’s medical bills, car repairs, or damaged property. Clients can also get comprehensive and collision coverage plans.

Esurance’s Expansion into Canada

Esurance’s headquarters are in San Francisco, California, and its insurance services were initially available only within that state. By 2000, Esurance had expanded into 24 states in the United States. Traditional insurance providers, such as Allstate, were losing policyholders to Esurance, GEICO, and Progressive, eventually triggering Allstate’s plans to acquire Esurance.

At the time of acquisition in 2011, Esurance offered its services in 30 U.S. states. Allstate acquired the company for about $1 billion, providing wider U.S. coverage and international expansion. Expansion into Canada began in 2015, with Esurance offering insurance policies in Alberta. Ontario’s expansion followed in 2017. Esurance did cease to offer new policies in Canada in 2018, though it continued to serve existing customers. In 2018, Esurance also sold policy renewal rights to Ivantage, another Allstate subsidiary.

How To Submit A Claim With Esurance Insurance

Customers were given access to Esurance’s exclusive members-only website, enabling them to file and oversee claims digitally. Once a claim is submitted, a dedicated claims representative will contact the claimant for additional details. This representative would also organize a vehicle inspection and assist with various steps of the claims procedure, such as securing a rental car.
